Underground Light : Coober Pedy
UNDERGROUND LIGHT
The only window is of stained-glass
a full crux of five split-frames
with the taller light stem depicting
a nurturing St Antonie of Padua,
the Portuguese Franciscan priest,
shown holding the Infant Child Jesus
and a book, and the coloured light
falls off his shoulders, all paid for
by opal miners, tough men from many
nations have chosen to display a holy
man nurturing a child - at Saint Peter
and Paul's Catholic Church, dug in to
a tunnel underground in Coober Pedy
below fierce heat and wind-blown grit.
The other four topmost frames show:
a nail-ripped hand, a host & chalice,
a dove in descent of outer skies above,
and a short sharp metal sword criss-
crossed by a large metal key, through
which the full spectrum of outer-light
falls on my son's head and shoulders.
