DESERT OAKS
Like their own oasis
Desert oaks make real
Shade where none is
found otherwise, so hail!
Like a breeze on a scorcher,
Like a drink of garden air;
Allocasuarina decaisneana,
Of the family Casuarinaceae.
Not alone, for these gather,
Desert Oaks grow up together
As fellow bird-trees there
In groves of a brave feather.
This is a relief battalion,
Placed as to be a bastian,
Branched to thwart the sun,
For a place to keep upon.
The she-oaks provide a canopy
of wide spreading branches;
like a needle armed panoply
for this fleshed-earth's defences...
In a desert oaks oasis
Relief is, breath is,
Quite ours
For hours.
